  • 12th Century. Iran. Sand caste mirror. Sand casting was brought to Iran from China around the mid-eleventh century. The form, with a prominent central knob from which it could be hung, is also inspired by Chinese models. However, the decoration— with an inscription bearing good wishes in Arabic, a ring of running animals, and a scrolling vegetal design— is drawn from the repertoire of Iran during the time of the Seljuqs. Exterior inscription in Kufic: Blessing, joy, happiness, felicity, dignity, victory, uprightness, support, strengthening, authority, praise, and survival to its owner. Diam. 7 5/8 in. There is no god but / God alone / He has no associate / al-Qa’im bi-amr Allah. In the Name of God, this dinar was struck in Nishapur in the year 444. Qur’an 30:4–5. Gold issues (dinars) were not struck according to a standard, meaning they were meant to be weighed rather than counted. Those struck in Iran and in western mints in the eleventh century are all in fine gold while eastern mints continued under the Seljuqs to issue a debased composition first initiated by their Ghaznavid predecessor Mahmud (r. 998–1030)–an indication of the continuity of minting practices notwithstanding changes in rule.   • 12th Century. Iran. This object made of leaded brass (lead, zinc and copper) is hammered, cast and incised. It has a pentagonal blade with upturned sides. Two angles of the blade terminate in floral form with a slightly flaring edge. In center of the blade is a complex pattern with a circular medallion, interlaced hexagons, band with cable pattern, circles, interstitial triangles and hook-like projections. On the edge is a band with floriated kufi inscription terminating in a semicircle at each side. Where top of blade is joined to handle, an arabesque scroll contains in foliated kufi the words lillah, i.e. for God. Inscription in Kufic: Happiness and blessing and ... H. 22 7/8 in.
